I primarily struggle with other health issues, like depression, ulcers, and chronic sinus infections. Can nutrition therapy help me?
Absolutely. The GI tract is the epicenter of overall health and immunity, and so it's common to see cases of chronic infections, autoimmune disease, and ongoing pain subside or completely disappear as the gut heals. Because the body operates as a whole and integrated ecosystem, symptoms appearing in one area of the body can be caused by imbalances in an entirely different system. Everything is connected, and at the center of these connections is the GI tract. Optimizing gut function is the cornerstone of the work that we will do together. Mainstream research now shows a direct correlation between depression and poor gut flora (the "good" bacteria that communicate to cells, make vitamins, boost immune function, etc). Ulcers frequently persist due to an underlying infection in the stomach, or because of frequent consumption of over-the-counter pain medications or acid blockers. Chronic sinus infections have been shown to cease or dramatically lessen when dysbiotic yeast is eradicated. It all comes back to the gut. If you have questions about a personal health concern, please schedule a call so I can learn more about your symptoms and give you further insight.
I'm new to women's circles and don't know if I'm cut out for it. Are they required?
No, they are simply here if you're seeking emotional and spiritual support as you heal. I believe deeply that women's circles are an integral component of healing the body because of their supportive and reflective nature. They offer a critical balance to the independent work of maintaining a nutrition protocol and teach you to practice techniques that are harder to access independently. If you're more linear and science-driven, nutrition consulting will be a great fit for you.
How long will it take before I see results?
Timing will vary from person to person and will depend on a variety of factors, including the quality, duration, and complexity of your symptoms. You will likely experience some benefits within days or weeks. Symptoms related to other, more complex conditions, like systemic inflammation due to leaky gut, could take months or even years to completely dissipate, depending on factors like food allergies, daily stress levels, etc. You may also feel worse before you start to feel better. This process will take time, and while you'll steadily continue to heal, symptoms will likely ebb and flow. That's why I believe women's circles are so important; they provide support when you're feeling vulnerable or frustrated, and teach you mindfulness skills for trusting the holistic process and your body's ability to get well.
My life is so hectic right now that I don't think I have the time to implement changes to my diet. Is there a quick fix I can access in the interim?
While there are a variety of quick fix options out there, like weight loss programs and long-term "cleanses", I believe most of these wind up being a waste of money, time, and energy. Without understanding why your symptoms have appeared, you're essentially shooting in the dark to try and heal something that could require much more involvement than drinking x shake, taking y supplements, and doing z workout routine. These are a one-size-fits-all approach to symptoms that manifested due to very personalized factors, down to the health of your mother while you were in utero, genetic expression, environmental factors, and mental/emotional health. I approach every individual with the understanding that she is biochemically unique, and ought to be treated as such. If you'd like to work together but aren't sure if the timing is right, let's talk about tools you can implement in the meantime.
I don't enjoy cooking and usually eat out. Will I have to learn to cook in order to achieve my goals?
Home-cooked meals certainly offer the most diverse and nutrient-dense food options, but that doesn't mean you need to be a master chef to succeed in this work. I am a firm believer that food should taste good, support your health goals, and be as simple to prepare as possible. I will teach you how to batch cook for your week, so that you're not burdened with cooking every day, along with tips to make the act of cooking more enjoyable. I'll also arm you with tools for making good choices when you're out to eat, or eating at someone else's home.
Do you work with men?
Yes, I happily work with men for 1:1 nutrition consultations. At this time, community events are limited to women.
